Personal INVESTIGATION

TAROT, Pink floyd, and oz
by Seth William Brown

..Some may say that nature has a strange way of turning things out on itself, and there are very many other subjects that can pertain to the same concept as this. Such as the Titanic and the Japanese ship, also named the Titinic. And assassinations of Lincoln and Kennedy, But the two subjects that really gained my interest recently was the common ground between the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, and the 1973 album Dark side of the Moon by the Pink Floyd. The hit story written by Frank Baum hit the screen in 1939 and was considered a commercial flop for its high budget. Though it had many good reviews, the film made little sales initially. It was only after the films hit song Over the Rainbow. (Sung by Judy Garland) won an Oscar is when the film became a permanent stamp in American film history.

..Pink Floyd’sDark side of the Moon” was an inspirational album holding radio friendly songs that also has made its mark in American rock music. The band has been known for its sonic experimentation, and the mixing of blues, rock and the new electronic squalls. The band consisting members of David Gilmore, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright wrote the album of nine songs in the span of 7 months. The album spent over 1,500 weeks on the Billboard charts. Being the only album to be removed from the charts by rule.

..Synchronize the two by playing the dark side of the moon album at the end of the MGM lions third roar. The Album will line up with the beginning credits to the film. This will give you a great entertaining treat. As some of you may know the synchronizing of film and music has been a thing that MGM and Disney was experimenting with in the early years of animation. Being that most movies were silent in the years before, and animation was a useful way for artists to move a film around the music that has been already set in the recording and the sheet music. NOTE: SEE IT ALL HERE!

..These day’s this process is now working in reverse. The movies are shot with the original lines made by the actors/actresses. And the sound effects are put in with a few people and a microphone in a soundproof room. This is the same concept that the Pink Floyd would have to conceive… "if this is what they were intending to accomplish?"... though no one has done it this way before. Intending to make an album to coincide with a film would be a totally new idea. And therefore a new form of writing music. The closest way that this may have been accomplished is with something called a metronome. This is a device that times counts thru a certain amount of time. Setting this device to a movies rhythm and writing your music to the timing afterwards. Keep in mind this is only my theory. But it’s the closest one I have discussed with others in knowledge of the subject. This would give only a bleak explanation to the musical efforts put forth by the Pink Floyd and their making of a creation that continues to elude our imaginations.

..Yes, I wrote "elude" and the only reason I say this. Is for the underlying meaning of the film, the album and Tarot. As many of you know the main use for the deck is for telling the future in "ones destiny". This of course is a great underlying feat for any person to conceptualize, though it is not discredited in all aspects. The cards first appear in Christian Europe after a timely ban in Switzerland around 1367. Described as a 52 card deck, then later becam a 78 deck with the adding of a fool and 21 trump cards. It was in 1377 when the cards were then distributed more across Europe. The cards became a regular gaming sensation. In 1418 the painter Michelino da Besozzo repainted the deck of Tarot and finished in 1425 this deck can be recognized to this day. Though there is no proof that the deck was in existence before this date. It’s doubtful that there was nothing for the artist to go off of for such a large precise project. There are records of other decks coming into play around 1440 in Ferrara, Italy.

..There are now hundreds of Tarot deck designs with also as many games for their playability. When Johann Gutenberge made the world’s first printing press in 1439. It gave the cards great opportunity to grow. Many other assumptions can be made to the effects of their origin coming from the Egyptians and therefore aliens from space that gave them this knowledge, too simply old storytelling by early man. Either way the cards are here for all us to continue to amuse, and "elude" us to this very day.

..I would have to say that my first realization of the Oz / TAROT similarities was the character Dorothy herself. The introduction of a story using a lonely girl, who runs away from home is a typical beginning for any story or journey to begin. Whenever I was presented with the similarities with (Dark side of the Moon) and (Wizard of Oz) I began finding other things that fit the two together. [Example] the cover to the album holds the motion of the story itself. Simply rotate the album cover upside down, and you realize the introduction of color thru the triangle, which now seems to look like a twister / tornado.

..Several other references to each other works are all over both the movie, and the album. I strongly suggest watching these together, and not just watching and listening. Read into the lyrics of the album; leave the sound for the movie somewhat up so you can hear both. You will experience more then just the eye and ear can handle. Ill leave it up to you to do so.

The JOURNEY CONTINUES: OZ and the TAROT

..These day’s, most TAROT decks are made up of two Arcana: The Major, and the Minor. Here for this comparison we are using the RYDER WAITE TAROT DECK. The major cards setting the example of (greater secrets) have 21 number cards and a 22nd card that is the fool. This card has an uncanny familiar scene in our movie when our fool is leaving home. The dog as her only companion, walking into the sunset of uncertainty and carrying her only tool of music with her voice. Notice the fact that she also has a white handkerchief with her as well. These are all main symbols with certain reasons in the fool card and in Tarot readings. The Fool walks away from the sun, over a cliff of uncertainty. The only companion is the dog to his/her side, and the flower or handkerchief symbolizing innocents and purity.

..Next we have the Magician. The fact that this card is numbered as one, and the first person that Dorothy runs into in our story is Mr. Marvel “Acclaimed by the crowned heads of Europe” makes me believe that he represents the Magician in our story. Giving Dorothy a choice in continuing to run away from home, or go back to her family. This indicates the arms pointing in our Tarot deck. Pointing to the heavens, or to the ground below. The sword, pentacle, cup and staff on the table before our card, (table being the carriage in our movie) can hold the same meaning of consequence in ones progression of their decision. Mr. Marvel in the story gives Dorothy a reading into his crystal ball. After his reading and persuasion, he convinces Dorothy to return home.

..As many of you know, Dorothy returns home to find everyone is already in the storm cellar. She finds herself trying to find Auntie Am and is knocked out by the window. As she wakes to the sudden jolt of the house, she wonders to the door and opens to see munchkin land. And of course we all know the next person she sees:

..The High Priestess. With her orb or crescent moon representing virgin or autonomous state, this card provides knowledge and protection. The same with the good witch in our case. She also has the crown of Isis; this associates her with the archetypal goddess of thousands of names. Giving one of these names to Dorothy, Oz. Her wand or scroll, suggests wealth of knowledge, or "witch craft" It’s also a very mysteries card of the Feminine. This also holds Secrets not yet revealed, and hidden problems may lay ahead..

.The Empress / Scarecrow: The Empress or scarecrow is found with rows of wheat among them. These rows are a symbol for abundance and fertility. The staff running up the Back of the Empress is a symbol for the tree of life and the reasoning for the ancestry of the traveler. The hat of stars, are for the fruitfulness and endless supply of creativity. The Scarecrow leaves with Dorothy and they run into a new friend.

.The Emperor: The Emperor sits upon his throne perfectly still to show strength and power. Being the fourth card, it is one of the most solid cards for one to receive. A mace in the left hand shows a level of weakness. This would be the oil can for a tin man. The staff or Axe is a symbol for protection and consort to the Empress. The hat or crown is a symbol for masculinity, virility, and master to the warrior gods. If you watch the film you realize there are two animals in the background behind Dorothy as Tin man is doing his dance. These animals can be said to be the emblems of Sky gods who symbolize power and strength. This card is for Structure, Success and ambition though it can also mean a loss of control.

As you will see with the rest of the cards, there are so many ways to tie these three subjects together. And the fact that they tie together so closely is something that I feel is not just coincidental. Keep visiting www.visionsmagazineonline.com to continue to view more on this subject soon.
