SERIAL KILLERS 3
by Tara Ciampa / Editor

..It is always more obvious to see what a serial killer hates. It is much more fascinating to ask: “What did they love?”

..In the case of the SCORPIO its can be something they fall short of attaining. Scorpios are born under the influence of Mars and Pluto. Nannie Doss (born as Nancy Hazle on November 4, 1905 in Blue Mountain, Alabama) claimed 11 “known” victims. Nannie was a very secretive Scorpio - which is a very prominent Scorpio trait. I truly wonder how many other victims there were that will never be known. Nannie earned herself these monikers: The Jolly WidowThe Giggling GrannyArsenic Nanny. Nannie loved what she couldn’t have or seem to attain but never grew tired of trying. Her favorite hobby was reading romance novels. She never gave up trying to find a romantic man. She married five times!

..Scorpios are the MOST DETERMINED sign of the Zodiac. When the man she took as a husband fell short in the romance department he didn’t know that his behavior was equated with signing a death warrant if his betrothed was Nannie Doss.  The Scorpio will ALWAYS SEEK THE POWER POSITION. No one was about to make Nannie feel inferior or neglected or the weaker sex and actually live to tell about it.

..When Nannie was around age 7 she was on a train and on her way to visit relatives. The train stopped suddenly causing Nannie to hit her head with a great deal of force on the metal bar on the seat just in front of her. Nannie stated that she had terrible headaches all her life since the train accident. For years this caused her headaches, blackouts and depression.

..GROWING UP

..Nannie's childhood could be described as oppressive and bleak.  She was one of five children. She grew up with one brother and three sister. At the tender age of five Nannie was forced to chop wood, tend to the fields, and clear the land of weeds. Not really what a child looks forward to after walking two miles home from school. Her school attendance suffered due to her father keeping her home to work on the family farm. She was raised by a strict controlling father with a nasty streak. Nannie’s favorite past time was reading romance magazines. During her teenage years she was restricted by her father and was forbidden to wear makeup or wear attractive clothing. Neither was she allowed to attend dances or other social events.

..NANNIE’S FIRST MARRIAGE
– 1921

..In 1921 Nannie met and married her first husband, Charlie Braggs. Her husband devoted a lot of time to his mother. He was an only child. She resented her mother in law and said she had taken over her life completely. It was an unhappy marriage and neither remained faithful. They had four daughters together. Nannie started drinking and smoking heavily. In early 1927 two of their middle daughters died of suspected food poisoning. Charlie left Nannie and took their oldest daughter, Melvina. Charlie feared Nannie. Florine, their newborn was left behind with Nannie. Charlie’s mother died right around this time coincidently.

..-SCORPIO TENDENCIES- The Scorpio dynamic I see here is that Independence and Power – two needs of the Scorpio were not being fulfilled. Nannie lashed out and Charles was fortunate that he was intelligent enough to know that Nannie was a danger to himself and his family.

..SECOND MARRIAGE – 1929

..In 1929 Nannie married Robert (Frank) Harrelson, a 23 year old factory worker from Jacksonville. They resided in Jacksonville with Nannie’s two daughters. After a few months Harrelson was an alcoholic and had a criminal record for assault. In 1945 he made a mistake that cost him his life. In a drunken state he raped Doss. The 16 year marriage and his life was over. Nannie took the corn whiskey jar buried in the ground and filled it with rat poison. He died a painful death at Nannie’s hand.

..-SCORPIO TENDENCIES-  When a Scorpio has a course set for revenge you can usually count on the follow through.

..THIRD MARRIAGE – 1945

..Once again Nannie was scanning the Lonely Hearts Column. After knowing Arlie Lanning for only three days and married him. Harrelson was no prize. He was an alcoholic womanizer. When Arlie died of what was thought to be heart failure the whole town shoed up at the funeral. The house soon afterward burned to the ground. The house would have gone to Arlie’s sister. This is quite coincidental isn’t it. The insurance money went to Nannie. Nannie arrived at her sister Dovie’s home. Her sister was bed ridden and soon after Doss made her appearance. Dovie departed this world.

..-SCORPIO TENDENDIES- The Scorpio has an affinity for manipulation. There was the lure of insurance money and Nannie was determined (another Scorpio trait) to get it in her hands and that she did.

..FOURTH MARRIAGE

..Nannie was searching for true love once more and joined the Diamond Circle Club.  It was there she found and married husband number four, Richard Morton of Emporia, Kansas.  This time she found a man that didn't drink but worse yet he was a womanizer.  His faithlessness would wind up costing him his life.  Nannie first poisoned her mother, Louisa in January 1953 when she came to live with them.  Three months later she exterminated Richard, her betrothed.

..FIFTH MARRIAGE – 1953

..In June of 1953 Nannie was trying yet a fifth time to find her white knight.  This time she chose and married Samuel Doss.  Her new husband was a churchgoing man and kept Nannie on a short leash.  He kept her from one of her favorite things, reading her romance novels. She was also forbidden from having television or even a fan. Can you imagine not being able to read what you want.  I wouldn't react very favorably to that, but I wouldn't be reaching for the rat poison either.  In September Nannie was about to end her restrictions Samuel placed on her.  This is simply not acceptable to a Scorpio

..Samuel Doss became ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.  Perhaps he ate a bad batch of prunes.  The hospital was of the opinion that Samuel Doss merely had a digestive tract infection.  I guess it just never entered their minds to check for a rat poison infection.  On October 5 he was treated and released.  When he got home Nannie could not wait to finish him off and that she did.  This made his doctor suspicious and he ordered an autopsy.  The autopsy revealed a large amount of arsenic in his system.  Nannie's rush to collect insurance money made her become the target of the authorities.

..-SCORPIO TENDENDIES- Samuel Doss was placing restrictions on the INDEPENDENT Scorpio.  That would certainly trigger an adverse reaction.

..NO CHILD WAS SAFE AROUND NANNIE – ESPECIALLY HER GRANDCHILDREN

..Once again Grannie goes after insurance money. This time in the amount of $500. That was the price of baby Robert's death. Not a lot nowadays but back then… that was a nice sum of money!

..In 1945 Nannie's petite daughter Melvina went into labor with her second child.  Melvina called for her mother to be by her bedside during this traumatic ordeal.  Nannie complied and stayed at her bedside and even slept overnight.  She wiped her daughter's forehead and and ordered her husband to bring towels and water.  Melvina gave birth to a little girl.  When Nannie’s daughter Melvina gave birth she claims she saw Nannie stick a hat pin into her baby’s head. The death was declared unexplained.  Six months later Melvina's son, Robert was in Nannie's care and died under Nannie's watch.

..She managed to collect a tidy sum of $500 due to her careful planning of taking out a life insurance policy on him.

..HOW DID NANNIE GET AWAY WITH KILLING FOR SO LONG??

..I believe it was because of her Scorpio like ability to be very secretive. Nannie was very tight lipped about her dirty deeds!

..NANNIE CALLED IN FOR QUESTIONING

..On November 26, 1954 Nannie was finally called in for questioning. She gave her interrogators a run for their money. She laughed at the accusation. She stated that “My conscience is clear. I married these men because I loved them.” She answered the detectives with “I have never poisoned anyone.” She also added that she read a lot of love magazines and that her favorite television show was “Are of Amour. I’m sure I’ll find my perfect mate yet.” she told the officers. Nanny never once lost her composure and she managed to wear out FOUR interrogative teams causing them to give up for the night.

..Nannie tirelessly searched for her white knight and when the man she chose for a husband fell short of her high expectations she became a cold and calculating killer and served him his last meal.  One of her favorite lethal dishes was what appeared to be a harmless bowl of prunes which were in actuality laced with rat poisoning.  Her victim was oblivious that it was his last meal and one that would at the very least turn him into a paper tiger and at the very worst he would become a listing in the obituaries.

..WHAT WE ARE SEEING HERE IS THAT GOOD OLE SCORPIO DETERMINATION

..Nannie's bodycount was eleven.  Nannie confessed to killing four husbands, her mother, her sister, her grandson and her mother-in-law.  She pleaded guilty on May 17, 1955.  She was sentened to life.  Because of her gender she did not get the death penalty.  Nannie's 27 year killing spree was over.  Her span of killing started in 1927 and ended in 1954.  Nannie met her demise from leukemia and died on June 2, 1965 while in the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.

..Nannie was married five times but it seems that only made her more lonely because she wanted what she read about in the romance novels.  It wasn't in the cards for Nannie sadly.  Nannie was always left with the losing hand.  She used manipulation in the worst way.  She was not able to accept the bad hand she was dealt. She felt stifled by her family and by her husbands, so she killed them off, clearing the way for someone new to enter her life and give her a chance for the happiness and fairytale she was dreaming of.  It was simply unattainable for her and  she died trying and trying and never letting go of her dream.  This was the way of Scorpio Nannie Doss.
